As Hongkongers and people who care about global justice and peace, we stand in solidarity with film director Jun Li, who gave a speech supporting Palestine at the Berlin International Film Festival (or the “Berlinale”). Li attended the festival because it hosted the premiere of his 2025 film, Queerpanorama. Instead of foregrounding his personal fame and interests, Li read a statement on stage written by Iranian actor Erfan Shekarriz, one of Queerpanorama’s lead actors. This statement was initially suppressed by the Berlinale. It criticizes how the Western world has deliberately suppressed the truth of what is happening in Palestine, which is that Palestinians have faced more than half a century of ethnic cleansing by Israel.
It is not surprising that the German government has continued its repression of pro-Palestinian voices, mobilizing its police forces to investigate Li, attempting to twist the meaning of his statement for peace into one of racism. The German government declared that Li’s statement mentioned “From the River to the Sea,” which constitutes antisemitism. However, this slogan means to oppose Zionism, as Zionism is a political stance of extreme brutality. Israel has no power to represent all Jews in the world. Indeed, many Jews have come out in opposition to Israel’s blatant disregard of the traumas of Jewish history, and Israel’s ethnic cleansing of other peoples. These Jews, who support human rights and equality, also raise the slogan of “From the River to the Sea.” All Palestinians have the right to live freely in the lands they were born in, which stretch from the river to the sea. Zionists proclaim the right to ethnically cleanse indigenous Palestinians from their homes. They have massacred whole villages, treated the surviving Palestinians as second-class citizens, and used other methods to maintain an exclusionary Israeli state at all costs.
Director Li opposes this inhumane ideology of Zionism. His stance has nothing to do with the infamous antisemitism of Europe that resulted in the Holocaust during the Second World War. Western countries’ claim that “From the River to the Sea” signifies antisemitism merely confuses the facts and misleads the public.
(Pinkwashing)
It is rare for Hong Kong’s art workers to be recognized on a grand international platform. To speak the truth on such a platform about the oppression of marginalized peoples shows an unyielding sense of courage.
It is rare for Hong Kong’s art workers to be recognized on a grand international platform. To speak the truth on such a platform about the oppression of marginalized peoples shows an unyielding sense of courage. Hong Kong society has tended to express hatred and prejudice toward the experiences of non-white communities, including Palestinians, about whom Hongkongers barely know. There have been online attacks, and even calls to boycott, Director Li. Even the Israeli consulate in Hong Kong chimed in, taking the opportunity of Li’s speech to criticize Shekarriz, whose statement Li had read. The consulate asked what it would be like to proclaim oneself as queer in Iranian society, hinting that queer individuals should not support people in the Arab world.
Israel has always pretended to support queer rights, using “pinkwashing” methods to normalize its genocide of Palestinians. As queer Palestinian activist Rauda Morcos said, even if Israel adopts queer-friendly laws inside its country, queer Palestinians living in Gaza cannot escape Israel’s daily airstrikes. Morcos puts it succinctly: “There is no pride in occupation.”
How Could Palestinians Love If They Lose Their Lives?
If one wants to criticize Palestinians for not being as queer-friendly as Israel, or if Israel is as inclusive as it proclaims, Israel could at least support queer Palestinian activists to determine what liberation could be on their own terms, not using Hamas as an excuse to bomb Gaza indiscriminately. Israel proclaims queer slogans while standing on the corpses of the countless Palestinians they have killed. This is a disgrace to all queer people. [Ed. note: It is also worth noting that Israeli intelligence agencies have been known to blackmail queer Palestinians in order to secure cooperation or intel, effectively weaponizing their queer identity against them.]
Furthermore, Israel shows different faces depending on its audiences. On the one hand, they raise pride-themed flags on the rubble of Gaza after bombing the region. On the other hand, they have stirred up homophobia as they court conservative Christian Zionists, declaring that they “stand for family values.” This is sufficient to demonstrate its hypocrisy.
To stand with Palestinians facing oppression is to stand with justice, equality, and peace. Hongkongers should not assist the wicked in their deeds, unquestioningly believing Israel’s pinkwashing. Settler-colonial empires and totalitarian regimes continue to exist in the world, but people everywhere have not ceased to struggle for justice. In the face of this massive scale of genocidal destruction, to be silent is to be complicit. How can Hongkongers continue to hold on to their own biases and cover their eyes? Li is willing to support Shekarriz, using his identity as a Hong Kong director to amplify solidarity with Palestinians on an international stage. Li’s stand should make us proud as Hongkongers.
