Resource: Palestine solidarity zines in the Sinosphere

An archive of activist ephemera that pushes against the mainstream prevalence of Asian, diasporic, and Asian American Zionism

Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians since October 7, 2023 has spurred a milieu of anti-imperialist voices among Sinophone communities. Some have developed into organizing collectives like Palestine Solidarity Action Network, Taiwan-Palestine Solidarity Network, and Hong Kong Anti-War Mobilization. Others have continued their advocacy as individuals or in broader Palestine solidarity organizations.

A common link that bridges many of these efforts is zine production. With few exceptions, there is little accurate reporting of Palestinians’ history and struggle from a clearly anti-Zionist angle in Sinophone media. In this light, these zines have become a key avenue through which Sinophone communities have educated and organized each other about Palestine. They are also an important historical record of international solidarity, anti-war, and anti-imperialist activism in the Sinosphere.

Here we aim to republish as many of these zines as possible in PDF form that readers can easily download and circulate. Most of these productions have been circulating more informally as digital ephemera—on Instagram, Signal and elsewhere. We see a need for them to be collated and archived to better document the historical existence of this current of political activism and analysis by Sinophone communities.

Though the views expressed in these materials do not necessarily reflect the precise positions of Lausan or its various members, we feel it is important to include a broad array of Sinophone and Asian diasporic points of solidarity and engagement with Palestine. We see this as an important digital archive, a material for reflection and action, and a counterpoint to the more visible and institutionalized Zionism of Asian and Asian American politics.

If you have other recommendations for zines for us to archive on this page, please send us an email.

Against Pinkwashing: Queers & Feminists for Palestine / 反对粉红清洗: 华人酷儿女权撑巴勒斯坦DOWNLOAD

Image courtesy of Queers & Feminists for Palestine

This English-language zine was created by Chinese and Taiwanese feminist and queer activists, which criticizes Israel’s attempt to weaponize its selective support for women’s and LGBTQ rights to present itself as a “liberal democratic country”—all while maintaining settler colonial occupation in Palestine. It also encourages readers to think about how the Palestine liberation movement offers useful frameworks to understand China’s own colonial practices, especially against women in “Xinjiang.” (Instagram)

This multilingual pamphlet from the New York-based collective Asians 4 Palestine1 makes the case for Asian/American readers that they should care about and reject Zionism. In a series of comparisons between local and global impacts of Zionism and its enmeshment with finance capital in the US, A4P trace resonant histories of colonization, militarization and displacement between various East/South-East Asian communities and those whom they call “fellow West Asians in Palestine.” The pamphlet takes an important step in tracing out Zionism’s deleterious impacts both at home and abroad to make the case that “the fight for the liberation of Palestine will free us all.” (Instagram)

Anonymous Hong Kong Collective DOWNLOAD

Image courtesy of Anonymous Hong Kong Collective

This collection of pro-Palestine solidarity materials is by an anonymous collective of Hong Kong activists. Their archive features a variety of materials such as an adapted Maqloubeh recipe from Palestinian chef and photographer Nadia Gilbert (IG: @nadiadiaspora), through which they discuss Israeli attacks on Palestinian food sovereignty and ecology. They also use the recipe to feature local foodways through adjustments based on seasonal ingredients in Hong Kong. Other materials include posters and stickers that deconstruct common pro-Zionist talking points and zines that address how to take BDS action in Hong Kong. Much of the material is either bilingual Chinese-English or one or the other. The Sinophone materials, such as the “Media Dos and Don’ts for Oct 7” are especially critical for addressing local Hong Kong audiences and countering common “Hasbara” (Israeli propaganda) talking points.
