In April of this year, African migrants in Guangzhou were unfairly targeted and displaced in the wake of the pandemic lockdown. Last week in Minneapolis, an Asian (Hmong) police officer stood idly by as his white colleague murdered a Black man, George Floyd, in cold blood. As members of the Chinese diaspora, how can we respond to this racial calculus of anti-Blackness in the world today? How can we sort through the complex experiences of being in the Chinese diaspora, move beyond the “model minority” myth, and stand in solidarity with Black communities against the persistent domination of racial capitalism?
Lausan Collective, Parisol // Pacific Rim Solidarity Network, and Seeding Change are hosting a series of webinar discussions on these topics. The first in the series will be moderated by Lausan, providing a space for those who identify as Chinese diaspora to begin talking about race, gender, and belonging (others are welcome to join), while later installments will feature exchanges between Black and Asian speakers and participants.
